Internship / Research Lab. Work in Photonic Quantum Systems (all genders)

A passion for solutions with light – that's the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF! Based in Jena, a city with a long tradition in optics, we conduct application-oriented research in the field of photonics. We develop innovative light-based technologies and create state-of-the-art optical components and systems along the entire process chain—from design and simulation to manufacturing, integration, and application of customer-specific solutions and prototypes. When will you join us in shaping the future?

Be part of change

We are the Photonic Quantum Systems (PQS) Department at Fraunhofer IOF, a diverse and international team of more than 40 members from different cultural and academic backgrounds. We foster a welcoming, collaborative, and stimulating working environment that encourages the open exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experiences. Our research focuses on advancing quantum optics, photonics, and optical technologies, combining fundamental theoretical understanding with experimental research and practical applications. We value curiosity, creativity, and teamwork, providing an environment where students and researchers can develop their scientific and technical skills while contributing to innovative research projects.

Topic: Spatial-Mode Demultiplexing (SPADE) for Super-Resolution Imaging

The goal of this project is to develop and characterize an experimental optical setup for spatial-mode demultiplexing (SPADE) using Hermite–Gaussian modes. The student will assist in designing, building, and aligning the optical system, as well as investigating its performance in resolving closely spaced incoherent optical sources. Key metrics such as mode separation efficiency, optical losses, and spatial resolution will be measured and optimized, with the aim of evaluating SPADE as a technique for super-resolution imaging in microscopy.

These are your responsibilities:

• Assist in the design, construction, and alignment of an experimental optical setup for spatial-mode demultiplexing (SPADE)

• Implement and optimize the generation and detection of Hermite–Gaussian spatial modes

• Characterize the optical system in terms of mode separation efficiency, optical losses, and alignment sensitivity

• Perform experiments to investigate the resolution of closely spaced incoherent optical sources

• Analyze experimental data and evaluate the performance of SPADE for super-resolution imaging applications in microscopy

What you contribute

• Understanding of Modern Optics (must have) and basics of Quantum Optics (nice to have)

• Fundamental knowledge of microscopy principles (resolution limits, imaging systems, point-spread functions)

• Basics knowledge in Python programming for data acquisition and analysis

What we offer

• Cutting-edge research across a wide range of pioneering flagship projects that drive society and the economy forward

• Modern workplaces and state-of-the-art laboratories

• Networking with industry partners and research groups

• Working in a collegial, open-minded team

• Excellent links to local public transport

Working hours and duration of contract will be agreed individually. Remuneration according to the federal government guidelines for intern salaries.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Our tasks are diverse and adaptable – for applicants with disabilities, we work together to find solutions that best promote their abilities.
