Senior Manager, Communications - Japan

Netflix is one of the world's leading entertainment services, with over 300 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.

The Opportunity

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode — pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom, and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition, and cutting-edge technology.

Netflix's Communications team tells and protects the Netflix story — everything from our titles and talent to our products, partnerships, policy positions, culture, and executive voice. The team builds understanding and goodwill with both external and internal audiences, using earned media, executive storytelling, and internal channels to build engagement.

It's an amazing time to join the Netflix team in Japan as we continue to transform entertainment and bring Japan's stories to audiences around the world. Come be a part of what's next.

About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Manager to lead two distinct, high-visibility pillars of the Japan Communications team: Content Communications and Advertising Communications.

• Content Communications: Own the communications strategy for a meaningful slice of Netflix's content storytelling in Japan — building narratives that connect Japanese titles, talent, and moments to audiences locally and globally. This spans both bringing Japanese stories to the world, like anime, and live programming here in Japan, across sports and music. The specific mix may evolve with the business. You'll partner with global and regional Comms, Publicity, and Content teams to build one coherent Japan-to-world narrative.

• Ads Communications: Serve as the communications lead for Netflix's advertising business in Japan, translating our ad-tier and advertiser partnerships into a compelling business narrative for trade, business, and marketing media, and supporting leadership spokespeople in one of the world's largest advertising markets.

Like most content and business communications roles at this level, this one includes its share of issues management alongside the proactive storytelling work — you'll want good instincts for when something needs a fast, thoughtful response, and the judgment to know when to escalate versus handle it yourself.

Across both areas, you'll move comfortably between reactive press management and proactive, business-building storytelling, and partner seamlessly with Japan, APAC, and Global stakeholders across Content, Marketing, Publicity, Policy, Legal, and the business teams you support.

At the Senior Manager level, you'll own execution of strategy for this area rather than simply carry out someone else's plan — leading complex or high-profile campaigns often spanning multiple titles or initiatives, and holding your own in a room with senior executives, reporters, and key external partners. You'll be trusted to manage issues and escalations autonomously, with the judgment to know when (and how) to bring in Director-level support, and — where the role includes people management — to hire, onboard, and develop the Coordinators, Specialists, and Managers on your team.

Responsibilities

Content Communications

• Lead Japan's communications strategy across key content areas and moments — currently including live programming (sports, music, and other real-time events) and anime titles/franchises with global reach — partnering with Global and regional Comms, Publicity, and Content teams to build one coherent Japan-to-world narrative.

• Represent Japan Comms at relevant industry and fan-facing moments as the slate evolves.

• Proactively execute communication strategies and narratives that reinforce Netflix's content positioning in Japan and globally.

• Manage relationships with entertainment, trade, and general news media covering this part of Netflix's slate.

• Help the team anticipate and navigate content-related issues as they arise, looping in Publicity, Legal, and Policy as needed.

Ads Communications

• Develop and drive the communications narrative for Netflix's advertising business in Japan, in partnership with the Ads sales and business teams.

• Build and maintain relationships with advertising, marketing, and business trade press; support briefings, announcements, and thought-leadership moments (e.g., partner announcements, industry events).

• Position Netflix as a credible, growing player in Japan's advertising industry, balancing business storytelling with member-experience considerations.

Cross-Functional & Leadership

• Lead high-profile or complex campaigns — often spanning multiple titles or initiatives — across the content and ads portfolios.

• Maintain and deepen relationships with senior stakeholders, including executives, reporters, and key external partners.

• Manage issues and escalations with good judgment on when and how to involve leadership.

• Anticipate challenges, manage conflict, and help the team navigate ambiguity.

• Apply AI tools to improve campaign efficiency and output quality, and help team members build the same fluency

• Monitor the Japanese and relevant international media landscape for emerging narratives, risks, and opportunities.

Experience & Skills

• Extensive communications experience (typically 15+ years) spanning entertainment, media, technology, or advertising, including agency or in-house experience in Japan — with a track record leading (not just supporting) high-profile or complex campaigns, and the presence to hold your own in a room of executives.

• Solid experience managing communications issues as they come up, with sound judgment on when a situation needs to escalate and when it doesn't.

• Direct experience with high-profile content communications spanning complex genres and formats, including work with an international dimension and significant fan or media visibility.

• Some familiarity with advertising, marketing, or business communications, or a clear ability to get up to speed quickly in a new commercial domain.

• Deep understanding of Japan's media landscape — business, trade, and entertainment press — along with familiarity with the international/English-language media relevant to global content storytelling.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Japanese and English (business-level fluency in both required).

• A collaborative, low-ego style, with the ability to build trust across content, marketing, legal, policy, and business stakeholders in Japan, APAC, and globally.

• A calm, level-headed operator who can stay clear-thinking under pressure when needed, without that being the sole focus of the role.

• Comfort using AI tools to support day-to-day communications work, with an interest in helping others on the team build the same fluency.

• Experience managing and developing team members is a plus.
