Job Description:

King operates mobile games at a massive scale. With titles like Candy Crush, Candy Crush Soda Saga and Farm Heroes Saga, our code runs on hundreds of millions of devices across the world. We believe that the right tools in the right hands are key to our success as a company.

If you want to boost productivity for the teams creating entertainment for millions of players to enjoy on the go then this is the right job for you. In the role of Game Engine Developer, you’ll be at the heart of our tech, evolving the cross-platform engine and toolchain that empowers hundreds of developers to build King’s world-class casual games.

This role belongs to part of the Kingdom we call Shared Tech. The teams within Shared Tech work as B2B organizations working across all the technology that we use to power our live games, including data infrastructure, machine learning, payments infrastructure and the game engines themselves. The vision within Shared Tech is "We are the stage where King games love to perform”.

You will be working in Shared Tech’s Game Production organization, where we focus on game-changing tooling and infrastructure to enable our content creators to build features faster, easier and more reliably. This includes working across multiple teams to facilitate both architectural decisions and hands-on development to support smaller feature teams based on rolling needs.

You should have a broad range of knowledge and be able to context switch easily to provide active support across the whole team and beyond. The ability to see the project as a whole is crucial as you monitor the development in real- time to determine how we should support and assist the rest of the development team. You’ll also play a key role in improving our feedback loop, making it easier for teams to adopt tools and for our team to learn what’s working (or not). Strong communication and empathy for end users are essential.

King is a place where we build features in the open, collaboratively. We value diverse opinions and make sure every voice is heard. We offer you the freedom and opportunity to work on fulfilling tasks and to continue your journey as an expert tools developer.

Your role within the Kingdom

You will enjoy a creative, challenging and collaborative environment where your ideas will be every bit as valued as your programming expertise. Some of your responsibilities include:

• Develop the game engine, refine new and existing features, and design, implement, and maintain in-house tools embedded directly within our products.

• Collaborate with various current and future users of our Game Engine, bridging various crafts within King with the intent to optimize, improve and discover workflows across games

• Deliver high quality and well-structured code

• Improve quality and performance inside our products landscape

• Share knowledge and best practices with peers and game teams

• Drive and support features adoption with stakeholders in the game teams across King

Skills to Create Thrills

You are a programmer who enjoys an array of challenges, and strives to deliver great products and technology. You are a self-starter, curious and a fast learner. You are excited to contribute to live games with a massive user base. You question the status quo and strive for effective innovations as much as you like maintaining and extending existing software. You enjoy being in contact with users of your tools and use their feedback to improve your work.

• Strong C++ knowledge and experience

• Python knowledge with experience

• Strong communication and collaboration skills

• Experienced with testing, automation and continuous integration

• Experience with performance-critical software is a bonus

• Ability to work closely with cross-discipline teams to understand their needs

• High sense of code quality and polish and the desire to build and maintain a high-quality code base

• Ability to develop on multiple platforms: Windows and OSX

Bonus Points

• Experience with game editor extension systems (e.g., Unity Editor scripting, Unreal Editor tooling, or custom C++/Qt editor frameworks)

• Familiarity with using observability tools, for example Sentry or Grafana

• Experience with Cloud frameworks / technologies (GCP, Docker, k8s etc)

• Experience facilitating workshops or leading technical presentations internally

What we offer

In Shared Tech, our team is focused on supporting multiple game teams with high quality tools. We take pride in the tools that we deliver, and the team that builds them. We are looking for a new voice in this context and want to find someone who has the technical skills we need while also contributing to the team as a whole. We have prioritized trust and open communication as the cornerstone of our team culture.

Finding the right mix of autonomy and support is another important aspect of work in this team. We enable this by making sure that information is shared effectively and prioritizing supporting each other when help is needed. We have chosen this approach since we believe in creating an environment that enables us to actively contribute to shaping the way we move forward. While also making sure that we, as a group, are aligned. This requires a sense of responsibility from us all, something which we are also proud of.

We believe that in order to remain competitive we need to grow in our roles, we support this by investing time and effort into personal development continuously throughout the year.

We also offer truly awesome benefits here at King in addition to a thriving social calendar of events for Kingsters to really get to know each other.

A Great Saga Needs All Sorts of Heroes

Making games is fun. Especially when you do it with people who share the same idea of what makes a good workplace great. We design games for everyone, no matter where they are or who they are, and we employ all sorts of people from all kinds of backgrounds to bring them to life. Truth is, we simply cannot expect diversity in our players and originality in our games without first nurturing it in our people. A great saga needs all sorts of heroes.
