Internship
Paderborn, Fraunhofer IEM – together with strong partners and a passion for technology, we research what engineering of the future looks like. Our teams develop solutions that are truly put into practice: from smart products to networked production systems, to digital services and modern software. We think innovation from the first concept to implementation. And that's where you come in!
For a thesis, we are looking for a motivated person to develop and prototypically implement concepts and algorithms for tool path planning for selective material removal with robot systems.
Why this topic? In many manufacturing processes, only specific areas of a component need to be processed precisely – for rework, deburring, or removing local surface defects. Today, this selective material removal is often done manually, which is time-consuming, poorly reproducible, and highly dependent on the experience of skilled workers. The aim of this work is an approach that allows defined sub-areas to be automatically considered and suitable tool paths to be planned for selective material removal – as a basis for flexible, efficient, and highly automated processing solutions.
Analysis of the state of the art in robot-based material removal and tool path planning
Conception of a method for describing and transferring selectively processable areas (e.g., from CAD/3D data or quality information)
Development of strategies for path planning (e.g., contour- or surface-based) considering process parameters, tool orientation, reachability, and collision avoidance
Implementation of a prototypical software module for generating tool paths for robot systems
Verification of the approach in a suitable simulation environment and – if possible – exemplary testing on a real robot system
Evaluation of the solution regarding coverage of target areas, processing quality, and transferability to different applications
You are an enrolled student in computer science, robotics, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, or a comparable technical field of study.
You have successfully completed technical training.
You are interested in robotics, automation technology, and manufacturing processes.
You have programming skills (e.g., in Python, C++, or a robot-specific language).
An analytical, structured, and independent way of working is a matter of course for you.
Initial experience with CAD/3D data, robot simulation, or path planning is desirable.
You will gain exciting insights into current research projects with high social relevance in the field of sustainability and learn how scientific findings are put into practice.
An interdisciplinary and committed team awaits you, where initiative is valued, and you are given a lot of scope for design.
Thanks to flexible working hours, you can perfectly combine your work with your studies and gain valuable practical experience.
You have the opportunity to contribute your own ideas and actively participate at the interface between research and industry.
This position is an unpaid activity.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' competencies and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, worldview, disability, and sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled people will be given preference if they are equally qualified. Our tasks are diverse and adaptable – for applicants with disabilities, we will find solutions together that optimally promote their abilities.
With its focus on future-relevant key technologies and the exploitation of results in business and industry, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft plays a central role in the innovation process.
